Entry Requirements:  Anatomy & Physiology Certificate + Introduction to Chemistry

This level provides the foundation knowledge upon which the study of nutritional therapy depends.  You will gain an in-depth understanding of the nature and uses of vitamins and minerals and the properties and nutrient content of foods.  Remaining modules concentrate on the study of common diseases and their management, provding a strong platform for practical application at Levels 2 and 3.  The student is also asked to complete a number of case histories that reinforce the influence and use of food in different disorders.

Basic Health Sciences cover:

  • vitamins and minerals - their function, interactions, deficiency and toxicity symptoms, sources, assessment methods;
  • food compositiion - including dietary assessment, nutrient content, factors affecting bioavaility, metabolism, energy expenditure, food safety issues;
  • common diseases associated with the main physiological systems of the body - their aetiology, conventional & nutritional management, including commonly used drugs, their mode of action, side effects & contradications;
  • interactions between food and drugs;
  • introduction to research skills - developing the skills to find, review and evalute information.
